Guidelines of the Bujinkan
Bujinkan Cornwall practises by the guidelines of the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo, Japan and we encourage you to familiarise yourself with them. They are also a guide to living… Hombu Dojo (Japan) Guidelines. We also currently only train people aged 15+.
What is a typical Bujinkan Budo Taijutsu class like?
A typical Taijutsu class normally runs as follows : -
Junan Taiso - warmup, stretching and body conditioning exercises
Ukemi Waza – breakfall and rolling practice
Kihon Waza – fundamental techniques
Henka – variation and change
Shinkentaijutsu – moving towards actual “real life” self defence forms
How much does training cost?
Each lesson is £7.50 per student. We ask all students to make a contribution towards a group insurance in case of any unforeseen accidents. We also ask our students to register as a member of the Bujinkan Hombu Dojo in Japan. Full annual membership and insurance details will be revealed in the dojo, as prices are subject to change.
How old do I have to be to train?
We currently only hold teenager - adult classes and the age restriction on this is 15+. The maximum age is completely up to you, Grandmaster Dr Hatsumi Sensei is in his mid 70’s and still gives the younger practitioners a run for their money.
How many are there in each class?
Class sizes can vary considerably from four students and one instructor to twelve students and three instructors. It is our aim to keep class sizes small as this not only aids learning but promotes rapport and confidence between individuals participating.
What do I need to train in Taijutsu?
We recommend that you consult a doctor before you begin training but all in all you need a positive, open and questing mind. We don’t expect you to show up at the beginning with all the kit. We do recommend however that you bring loose old clothing so that you can begin your training. In the beginning of your journey through Traditional Japanese Budo we will focus primarily on “break falling” skills which are known in Japanese as ukemi, this is for your own safety within the training environment. Your training will progress through the Taijutsu / Hand to Hand forms known in Japanese as “kata“.When the time is right, and this will be dictated by your Instructor, you will be introduced into the many kata involving traditional Japanese weaponry. These weapon forms include: -
- Kenjutsu - The Study of Japanese Sword Fighting
- Rokushakubojutsu - The Study of Japanese 6ft Staff Fighting
- Tantojutsu - The Study of Knife Fighting
- Hanbojutsu - The Study of the Japanese Short Stick
- Shurikenjutsu - The Study of Japanese Blade Throwing
- Naginatajutsu - The Study of Japanese Halbeird Fighting
- Yarijutsu - The Study of Japanese Spear Fighting
- Juttejutsu - The Study of the Japanese Truncheon
- Hojojutsu - The Study of the Japanese Art of Rope Tying and Arresting
- Kusarifundojutsu - The Study of Japanese Chain Fighting
Extracurricular to the usual Bujinkan weaponry we also instruct practitioners in the use of Japanese Okinawan weaponry. These weapon forms include: -
- Nunchakujutsu - The Study of the Okinawan “Nunchucks”
- Saijutsu - The Study of the Okinawan Fighting Prongs
- Tonfajutsu - The Study of the Okinawan “Millstone Handles”
You will be expected to purchase your own weaponry but don’t panic many members are willing to share. A full Dojo pricelist is available to members with wholesale prices in order to keep the costs down.
The Bujinkan system also incorporates different technqiues for developing the relationship between mind, body and spirit known in Japanese as Shin Gi Tai. This development between mind, body and spirit can benefit us in many ways especially in the promotion of good health and a versatile outlook on life. The techniques, many from the ancient Mikkyo traditions include:
- Seishin Teki Kyoyo - Spiritual / Mental Development
- Kuji-in - Intention Channeling using Neuro Physical Programmed Response
- Kuji Kiri - Intention Channeling using Neurophysics
- Meso - Meditation techniques
New practitioners of Taijutsu
Classes are led by Black Belt Instructors. On the odd occasion when they cannot make the class, attending seminars in Japan for example, other senior practioners could be asked to take the class. New practioners are requested to arrive earlier to be greeted by the instructor. Before each class there is a warm up session following which the class then assembles, greetings exchanged and the lesson begins. We train in a fairly informal and friendly atmosphere as this helps learning. We focus on learning how to move the body so as to protect ourselves from harm. During training expect to examine techniques, with and without weapons, in rolling, break falling, striking, throwing and locking for self defence.
Ladies taking part in Budo Taijutsu
Here at Bujinkan Cornwall we take Ladies Self Defence very seriously. We also understand that ladies often have very different needs to men. We also undertstand that, in general, the Martial Arts environment in the UK is not a 100% devoted to the safety of women. Often we see male dominated testocerone fuelled arenas which fail to respect and the specialised and often subtle abilities of ladies in self defence. We at Bujinkan Cornwall are hoping to put an end to all this.
We currently have two female Shidoshi ho / assistant instructors who are both dedicated to support new female practitioners in this martial art. They have been trained to develop a “keen eye” in order to mentor the progress of budding female martial artists. Between the two assistant instructors you have a wealth of knowledge and commitment in order to empower ladies in the martial arts.
Beginners Class?
We do not have a beginner’s class as such, the lesson is integrated and as a ‘new’ practioner, you will be supported through the lesson by both the instructor and more experienced practioners. However absolute beginners will be instructed on proper movement, breakfalling, rolling and basic techniques. We also encourage people to ask questions, as this also helps in everyone’s development. We also maintain that people should have fun and enjoy the experience! We do not hold or participate in competitions, as the Bujinkan martial arts is not a sport. We do however have a grading system - gradings are organised by the instructor. More details about our unique grading system will be revealed once you begin your training. Additionally, we actively encourage members to attend seminars with other instructors, and if at all possible, visit Japan to train with the Grand Master and his senior teachers.
